You go Tim Gunn!

If you don’t know who Tim Gunn is… let me introduce you Tim is an American fashion consultant, television personality, actor,  and voice actor. He served on the faculty of Parsons The New School for Design from 1982 to 2007 and was chair of fashion design at the school from August 2000 to March 2007, after which he joined Liz Claiborne as its chief creative officer.

He has sparked some controversy for his remarks about  “full size” fashion.

“Designers say the plus-size woman is complicated, different and difficult, that no two size 16s are alike. Some haven’t bothered to hide their contempt. “No one wants to see curvy women” on the runway, Karl Lagerfeld, head designer of Chanel, said in 2009. Plenty of mass retailers are no more enlightened”

My response would be that most of us are curvy women and very proud of it!  One of the reasons that I created the FitNice System was to address those curves and show you how to fit them.  No women large or small has a perfect fit because no one is perfect.  I am one size at the neck, another at the shoulder, another at the bust and so on—I am not alone. After fitting 100s of women, I can tell you that all of us are a multitude of sizes on one body!

“Have you shopped retail for size 14-plus clothing? Based on my experience shopping with plus-size women, it’s a horribly insulting and demoralizing experience. Adding to this travesty is a major department-store chain that makes you walk under a marquee that reads “WOMAN.” What does that even imply? That a “woman” is anyone larger than a 12, and everyone else is a girl? It’s mind-boggling.”

I have always and will always detest the words PLUS SIZE, FULL FIGURE or WOMANS SIZE.  Why can’t we just have size this to that? Why does the fashion industry label us?  We that sew are blessed because we are NO size —we are our size.  I have worked for over 25 years to bring you tailored, well fitting, soft draping styles that look good on women—plain and simple—all women—no matter what size.

“The average American woman now wears between a size 16 and a size 18, according to new research from Washington State University. There are 100 million plus-size women in America, and, for the past three years, they have increased their spending on clothes faster than their straight-size counterparts. But many designers — dripping with disdain, lacking imagination or simply too cowardly to take a risk — still refuse to make clothes for them. Women who were larger than a size 12 always wanted to know, How can I look good, and why do designers ignore me?”

Women of all size , not just size 12 and above-want to know –How can I look good!   I hear this is my classes all the time.  It is the biggest reason I bring a rack full of clothes for the ladies to “play” with, try on and contemplate style!  Fashion should not be dictated by designers –it should be a suggestion!  We can then  take that information to pick and choose.  My advice is to go shopping, by yourself (friends lie—hahaha) and try on everything that you would say to yourself “ I would NEVER wear that”.  You will  be amazed when you take the time to analyze color, style, and fit.  You may come away with a totally different idea of sewing for yourself.

Please review some of the FitNice designs that  give you that soft, feminine, fashionable style for all ages and sizes.  What are your opinions?
