Lydia Herron

Those of you that know me, know that our lives were tied up (and still are) in the world of figure skating with my daughter Laura and my son Matt.  In fact, that is where I learned to fit.  No one wanted to sew for the boys—it was harder because the fit was harder—that got to be my job! and my choice.

This past week their first skating coach passed away at the age of 89.  She was such a huge part of all of our lives and she touched many more in her lifetime.  Lydia Herron did not have an easy childhood growing up in war torn Germany.  When she married she came to the US and settled in Louisville where she taught skating for over 50 years.

In the words of Laura “The ice skating world lost a great woman. Not only did she impact my life but she impacted the lives of all of her students as a teacher, as a counselor, a guide and a friend. I had not seen her for many years but my last encounter I remember thinking she hadn’t changed at all. She still had that vibrant personality, bundle of energy and zest for life. I have lost a friend, a mentor and a

loving person. May God rest her soul in eternal peace.”

In the words of Matt” The skating world has lost another great! This was my 1st coach and I am so grateful to have had such an incredible woman start what ended up being my life and my career! I was lucky enough to have spoken to her recently and She was still full of energy and spirit. Rest In Peace Miss Herron you will be missed. Thank you for sharing your passion!!!”

At her funeral, one of our “skating family” gave her eulogy.  He read the poem The Dash by Linda Ellis.  We were all very moved but the lesson here is amazing!  Even if you have heard this before—take time to read it again
